There are various definitions of box: 1) the usual one, being a container constructed with four sides perpendicular to the base, often having a lid or cover and used for a specific purpose; 2) another variation on the function theme, a box as small structure serving as a shelter; and 3) the sexual vernacular of box as a slang term for the female vulva. And then there is the metaphor, “thinking outside the box” conveying the act of thinking differently, unconventionally, or from a new and creative perspective. In this light, I think of my creations as ‘boxes outside the box’ – experimenting with shape and surface, my container boxes have with angular, spiked and pebbly surfaces, and my shelter box evokes a Japanese pagodas…and then there’s kinnara, which conveys the 3rd definition above…but to view this piece, you will have to go to the “figures” section, where she resides with other kindred spirits.
