Figures and All Manner of Whimsy

Truisms:

“A people without the knowledge of their (own) past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.

Marcus Garvey

A people without knowledge and appreciation of others’ history, origin and culture is an unhealthy tree.  “What sets worlds in motion are the interplay of differences, their attractions and repulsions.  By suppressing differences and peculiarities, by eliminating civilizations and cultures, progress weakens life and favors death.”

Octavio Paz

This section is comprised of cultural figures reaching back centuries and across mythological terrains.  They reflect stories, traditions, and beliefs associated with a particular people or history.  Especially dominant are figures representing what is identified as, generally speaking, “female,” ranging from the Persian woman with crossed arms to mythological Kinnara, the paradigmatic lover, half-human and half-bird of Southeast Asia, renowned for her dance, song and poetry…and in this representation, her box.
