Quales

There are times when I’ve taken brief breaks from hand-building and to get back in my groove, I always reacquaint myself with the clay by making a pinch pot piece.  In this process, I hold a large round ball of clay in one hand, and with my other hand, I make a thumb-print, or large indentation in the middle of the ball.  As I rotate the ball in my hands, I push down, in and up the sides from the inside, continuing until the piece is uniformly thin with the sides flared out and ends pinched and crimped.  Coaxing the piece in a fan shape, I continue to push from the inside to make a cracked texture on the outside.  I decided to call this series “Quale” as the definition seemed appropriate for both myself as the artist/creator, and the recipient, or viewer of my pieces.  If Quale meant “a quality or property as perceived or experienced by a person,” then in their creation and viewing, the subjective experience is paramount, unique and ever changing.  I also like their uplifted form, a “raising of the hands” to possibility and yearning.
