These pieces represent an evolution in my textile-texture experiments, and also, in the firing process. Choosing the fabric to use has always taken me as long as deciding the shape and size of the vessel. Here are examples of burlap and its fringed edge; corduroy ribbed thick and thin; and bark paper that leaves an edged crater pattern. The smoked vessel is the product of a pit firing process that I have recently started to experiment with. This piece is the elusive, unplanned and fortitudinous outcome, exhibiting a palate of color with a “water-colored surface” of smoky hues.
